Vol. 1 No. Issue: 12, February , pg. 1019-1043 (2025): PARENTAL PERCEPTION AND SUPPORT FOR VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AT THE HIGHER SECONDARY LEVEL

Abstract
This research has explored how the perception of parents has shaped choices of students to
pursue vocational education and training (VET) at the higher secondary level. Many parents
worldwide have preferred traditional college degrees over VET because of social stigma and
cultural beliefs that value academic paths. However, VET has offered strong job opportunities in
growing fields like healthcare and IT, where demand for skilled workers has risen significantly.
Countries with robust VET systems have shown lower youth unemployment rates. Using an
inductive approach and interpretivism philosophy, this research work has employed secondary
data collection and thematic analysis to investigate global VET trends, compare job outcomes
between vocational and degree graduates, and study successful VET models. Lastly, the
discussion section has recommended awareness campaigns and updated curriculums to shift
parental attitudes and boost VET acceptance, ensuring education has aligned with modern job
market needs.
